It hasn’t been an easy few weeks for President Mbeki and his controversial Health Minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. For all the fuss about the quality of healthcare in S.A. and the spread of HIV/AIDS, Mbeki has just fired the Health Minister’s Deputy, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. Now he has two personalities who seem to embarrass, rather than enhance, the presidency.

Ever since her appointment as the country’s top health official, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has been mired in the never-ending political debate surrounding her view on HIV/AIDS.

Left of What’s Right:Let's become the gatekeepers of crime
By Marlan Padayachee
Expatriates have put a new spin on crime in South Africa. They have begun doing the right thing from the leftist ranks to raise the profile of a blotted crime sheet that has sullied our spectacular transition to democracy.

Crime has touched the hearts of all races. Almost everyone knows someone who tells a real-life story of a hijacking, smash-and-grab, murder, rape, housebreaking, armed robbery or petty theft.

GERRY GILCHRIST: Mentor And Teacher For Graduates and First Gradors
In 1960, Gerald Gilchrist moved to London for additional training in Pediatrics. Whoever decided that the first World Twenty20 cricket tournament held in South Africa should coincide with the Rugby World Cup in France probably isn’t a married bloke.
FINANCE: JOHANNESBURG: ITS FOUNDING HISTORY DISAPPEARS
By Colin Donian
It once was the largest man-made mountain on the planet; it now shrinks, day by day, month by month. This time it is not global weather patterns eroding this massive monolith; it is the same who built it, load by load, who now dismember it, load by load-human machines..

By Dorianne Berry
Oh yes it’s true. South Africans are now getting fired up for National Braai Day. September 24th, the same day as National Heritage Day, is the day people all over the country will light up their braais and lovingly incinerate a "lekker boerie," or lamb chop.

Culture Shock: IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE...
By Drienie Hattingh
We always take the scenic road if Johan and I have the time and on that extraordinarily beautiful day we had the time because Johan was retired.

We were in New Mexico-Land of Enchantment-on our way to Taos, from Santa Fe.

We flew into Albuquerque the previous day with my mother, who is visiting from South Africa. The next morning we headed for Santa Fe where we booked into the Santa Fe Hotel. We spent the day in ‘Old Town’ where many stalls were put up for Labor Day weekend.
